What year is my kitty cat?

Just picked up this sled for my son. It's in real good shape was restored about 15 years ago and used about 2 times after that. The guy I bought it from said it was an 89 but was not 100% sure. These are the numbers on the tunnel 8800848. Does anyone know how to decode the older vin numbers?
