Kitty Ca engine smokes

hello,
I have a kity cat that I negotiated when I bought my house..Its a 1995. when i start it there is white smoke coming out of the exhaust.. Quite a bit at first and then it somehat cleans up but does not entirely go away.. It starts just fine and sounds good.. I am not a mechanic but to me sounds like maybe somone didn't put oil in the gas and toasted it.. Any comments appreciated
