Is this right??

Post by MNkittyCat »

Hi gang!

Just purchased a kitty for my kids, but after running it I noticed that it throws the chain off every time i rev it up a bit. After further inspection here is what I am seeing...

1) Chain is way out of alignment it seems...
http://cl.ly/00bbcfe69a1d7deb1f78

2) Chain guard is worn through...
http://cl.ly/0a81b3e034fb0a69b093

3) Is the sprocket on the wrong direction?
http://cl.ly/038f3cf3df39efdeead3

It seems the since the chain is out of alignment that of course it would cause the above issues, but how could this happen? And more importantly how can i fix this problem?

Any help would be great here, not sure where to start!

Thanks to all!

The sprocket is on backwards, the driven shaft look like it needs shifted over as well.

Thats what I thought, however the driveshaft isn't long enough for me to flip the sprocket around -- do i need a new driveshaft -- or can i simply buy a new sprocket, this is a 42 tooth sprocket(stock??) so should i just replace it?

Thanks 72!

I looked at the pics again, someone reassembled the driven shaft incorrectly. The mounting flanges for the shaft bearings need to be moved to the inside of the tunnel. This should correct the length issue.

So to be clear then.. this piece here (highlighted in yellow) http://cl.ly/22f3081bd02efba19b94
belongs on the inside of the tunnel? Is there any type of schematic/image I can use for reference here that you know of? All i can find is this... http://bit.ly/ahuCOS

Thanks for the help on this, snow is soon here and my kids are super excited for this... okok me too ;)

Yep, that needs to be inside the tunnel on both sides. The bearings are cam locks (unless someone put another style in) so when you loosen the set screw on the bearings you have to rotate the collar to unlock it from the shaft. Once everything is loose and where its should be just set the shaft so its end is flush with the bearing on the other side, that should get the position close enough, make sure you relock the collars to the shaft before tightening the set screws.

OK cool, is this something a non-mechanic can do, or should i just take it to a Cat repair shop do ya think? I can see myself taking this apart and not being able to get it back together again. :|

What you got to loose....except some time. If you cant fix it just put the parts into a box and go to your local dealer. Either you will fix it and learn something or you will fork out some dollars to get it done right. :)
