Customizing your snowmobile hood, especially on a Kitty Cat or other youth sled can be an awesome project for you and the kids. Painting a custom snowmobile hood requires some preparation, the right tools, and a bit of patience. Here are the basic steps you can follow:
These are cookie cutter instructions for customizing your snowmobile hood but I thought it was helpful nonetheless.
- Remove the hood from the snowmobile. This will allow you to paint the hood in a comfortable, well-ventilated area, and will prevent any overspray from getting on the snowmobile itself.
- Clean the hood thoroughly with soap and water to remove any dirt, oil, or grime. Rinse the hood thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before proceeding.
- Sand the surface of the hood with a fine-grit sandpaper to remove any rust or rough spots. This will also help the paint adhere better to the surface of the hood. Wipe away any dust or debris with a clean, dry cloth.
- Apply a coat of primer to the hood. This will help the paint adhere to the surface and will provide a smooth base for the topcoat. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding.
- Apply the first coat of paint to the hood. Use a spray gun or paintbrush to apply the paint evenly, starting at the top and working your way down. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second coat.
- Apply the second coat of paint. Again, apply the paint evenly and allow it to dry completely before proceeding.
- Apply a clear coat to the hood. This will protect the paint and give it a glossy, finished look. Allow the clear coat to dry completely before re-installing the hood on the snowmobile.
